As we get ready for the new growing season, it’s fun to look back at what you grew last year!

Probably my (Alexandra) last year in my big garden has me thinking about what I’ll want to grow that I really use. Tomatoes, of course, but what about carrots (cheap to buy) and tomatillos (also have way more than I need).

I (Chiot’s Run) was just thinking about this yesterday as well, looking through my old photos of delicious vegetables, dreaming of the wonderful bounty my larger gardens will produce this year. Here were some of my favorites from last year:

I (Sincerely, Emily) loved all the peppers that came from last years garden, but there was one particular vegetable thatΒ I was the most thrilled about growing last year. The allusive zucchini (courgette.) For several years I had tried and tried, and struggled and struggled to grow zucchini. Last year was a HUGE success.
What did you grow last year?
Didn’t your neighbour grow those Emily? ;)…can’t wait to see what you guys manage to grow this year while I am tucked up near my wood stove perfecting my sourdough techniques π
Your are right Fran. My neighbor has let me plant lots of peppers the past few years and last year I added zucchini.I take care of the spraying & watering with fish fertilizer (and BT if needed for worms.) He does the regular watering and I harvest for both of us. I even chop for them to freeze too. It is working out great. More peppers are in the ground already this year and they are going to let me do zucchini again in the fall. so exciting!
Smart way to garden…you can pretend that they aren’t yours and the “powers that be” that want to rain on your parade pass them by! I wonder if Glad next door will let me have a go at growing veggies on her property? π
ha ha – that is such a huge part of it. Pretending they aren’t mine and keeping my lips sealed so the dangblasted squash vine borers don’t know where I planted the zucchini.
EXACTLY! What a wise ruse! I am going to steal your technique (sort of) and plant veggies “elsewhere” and see if that doesn’t fool our own dangblasted (my new official word for the week π ) possums! (This new spell check feature is hilarious…just wanted me to change “dangblasted” to “sandblasted”…I recon sandblasted possums might be a step too far? π )
How exactly do you end up with more tomatillos than you can use? π Is there some secret to growing them? I’ve not had much luck. Between Oklahoma weather and the bugs we are lucky to get a few. No chance for making salsa verde.
I actually do end up using them all, although it’s often the last of my canning goods that gets used. They grow like weeds in Illinois. I know they don’t like to be pruned and generally just take care of themselves.
Thanks! I’m giving them another try this year. Hope they make it!
