One memory of growing up was going outside to snip some chives for my mom. I loved the job and I always loved the purple flowers on the chive plants too. I also loved the round hollow freshly cut stems with that distinct “chive” smell. Well, that apple (or chive blossom) didn’t fall far from the tree. I (Sincerely, Emily) grow chives. I actually have many chive plants throughout our gardens. I have common chive (Allium schoenoprasum) and flat garlic chives (Allium ramosum) and a lot of other herbs in between.

What herbs are growing in your garden?
We want to grow more herbs than we do but we never seem to get them planted. We do have chives, tarragon, some basil and we some time grow sorrel.
Hi Rick. I think you have a nice start with herbs. I have planted a little more each year and hope to continue to do that. It has been easy to get overwhelmed with wanting to planted anything and everything that I just stepped back and did a few at a time. Some make wonderful ground covers and some are great for filling in around the gardens too.
I keep herbs for the local bumble bees – lavender, rosemary, chives, mints. I’d like to grow sage but it doesn’t seem to grow well here. Too wet perhaps.
I’m will you Emily. My plants have more than one purpose. Native (if possible), drought tolerant, culinary, medicinal, and beneficial to bees, butterflies and birds too. They all don’t fit into every category, but most fit 2 or more. I am thrilled to grow sage here in So. TX. (don’t mean to rub it in) it loves the heat, full sun and little water…. I can’t ask for much more right now. Last fall I planted 5 more plants. I struggle with lavender. I have one very very small plant that has survived about a year now. I hope it starts to thrive more and I hope I can plant some more that will do well. I will keep trying.
Here in northeast PA, I am loving a new herb for the garden = hyssop. The bumble bees love it, + the catnip, monarda, lavendar, and dill that is flowering right now. The cilantro (coriander) is about 5 inches tall, and we are eating lemon balm in our summer salads.
Hi Stephanie, I have a few hyssop plants and they are doing well. I seem to see bees on it all the time and that is a great site. I have just laid down some of the stems and covered them with dirt so they will root and start some more plants for me. I have struggled getting monarda to grow. I have a small struggling plant that I hope will survive. I did have some wild ones come up this year – horsemint variety w/light lavender flowers and I will concentrate more on those next year because I know they do well here. Your herbs all sound wonderful! I will have to try lemon balm in some salads. That sounds good.
