“Faith sees a beautiful blossom in a bulb, a lovely garden in a seed, and a giant oak in an acorn.”
–William Arthur Ward
Here at Chiot’s Run the seed ordering time has begun. I always wait until after the New Year. I sit down with my seed collection, plan out what I want to grow, look through my seeds and order what I need. I also order a few things that look interesting to me. I enjoy growing my own food, but I also enjoy growing new and interesting things. I have the luxury of not needing to grow everything I eat, which allows me the wonder of trying new things. Sometimes they turn out beautifully like the strawberry popcorn I grew a few years ago, sometimes I’m dissappointed, like the quinoa I tried last year, hopefully the broom corn I grow this year will be fun. Part of the joy of growing for me is the hope that it brings each winter when I sit down and order seeds.
Do you grow from seed? What do you enjoy most about it?
I love growing from seed and just placed my seed order a few days ago. I only wish I had more room to try out more and grow a lot of different things.
There are some vegetables that I grow from seed, it is always fun to see that tiny bit of green poking out of the soil. I have used Renee’s Garden seeds and had very good success with them.

You seem to have a lovely system for your seeds!
Would you mind elaborating on it, if you find the time? I have my garden organized on folia for two years now, which helps me a great deal with planning and (incidentally) beeing actually on time with something 😉
Thank you for reminding, that it’s time to organize the seeds.
Yes, I have a post on my blog explaining it: http://chiotsrun.com/2011/01/15/my-seed-organizing-stash/
yes, love growing from seed. This year I hope to reduce the amount of seedling I buy and next totally be growing every thing from seed myself. I can get a seedling bigger and healthier to put in the ground when I think it is time (although I might not be right!). Emily
Grow pretty much everything from seed!
Here in BC Canada, our city (Richmond) was just awarded a nice chunk of change to start a seed saving bank! Our first meeting yesterday turned out people from all over the area: some as far as 3 hours away!
What is it like where you live, because it appears we are keenly aware of the seed “BS” happening with Bill C-36 (Canada) and S 510 (US). Canada also signed the CETA agreement, which means we may no longer be able to keep any seed. Canada is going mad….
So our response is to “Vandalize our country with produce”, heh heh… We are guerilla gardening this year: planting in areas of the city that need “a Job” to do: feed someone!
We have also come to the conclusion that there are some laws too unjust to follow. We will peacefully break them with seeds! Glorious seeds!
This summer we have grown most vegie’s from seed we saved last year. Hubby loves raising the seeds he has saved, gets a lot of satisfaction and uses it as an activity to do with the boys, they learn so much from it.
