Canning season is nearing an end here at Chiot’s Run and I’m quite happy about it. I’m not a huge fan of canning, but I do it to preserve summer’s bounty. I’m happy the season is almost over as I’ll be able to have a clean kitchen once again. My dining room table will have room to eat, no longer covered with tomatoes and all other varieties of vegetables. My stove top will be clear of canners and stock pots and my oven will no longer be filled with drying fruit. I will miss the view of jars filled with goodies on the counter, but I’m looking forward to the slower pace of winter for sure!

Are you sad or happy that canning season is nearing it’s end?
It’s bittersweet when the end of the growing/canning season is here. I’m exhausted, but it doesn’t take long to wish for it all to be here again.
I have to admit that I’m a bit relieved. My house had fallen so far behind, and it feels good to get it back in order. Well, somewhat orderly, anyway.
Although I enjoy canning, I am ready for a slower pace as well. I am looking forward to getting back to my knitting and crocheting, and that quilt I started and haven’t looked at since.
But right now I have to finish the apple juice I am currently making and canning.

I came across your blog today! I’m all about eating real food! I added you to my list to follow looking forward to keeping up and getting caught up.
Canning season never comes to an end around here! After summers selections, In the winter, I can soups and stews, beans, meats and other hearty fare.
I’m a little sad that the high season is wearing down, while at the same time looking forward to some of the same things you mentioned – clean kitchen, clear tables, and slightly less crazy pace of life.
On the other hand, I agree with mommaofmany that canning season doesn’t ever really come to a complete close for me. In the winter, I can things that are less season-specific (beans, soups, stocks). In many cases, those things take more time in the canner, which in the end heats up my kitchen, and I can turn the heat in the house down!
I confess to really adoring the whole process, aside from the mess. I’ve gotten better at managing that, though, and making the mess more efficient over the years!
