Deodorant is probably one of the hardest things to find a REAL version of that you like and that works for you. That’s probably because as humans we’re made to sweat – there’s a reason that we do – it’s not just some random thing that happens. It takes a lot of pretty serious chemicals, waxes and other weirdness to make us not sweat. As a society we’ve become so worried about pseudo cleanliness and often associate a “natural” smell with being unclean – which is really kind of a sad state of affairs if you think about it. We prefer to give ourselves cancer and other health problems by wanting to smell like synthetic things and look down upon those that smell “normal” and “natural”.

I have a bit of a different perspective on this because I grew up in Colombia, South America. Since it was a third world country while I was living there, the standard of living was very meager. Most people didn’t wear deodorant because they could barely afford food, much less something that would make them not sweat. Since the city we lived in was on the equator, it was hot, hot, hot. Since sweating helps your body cool off, the last thing you want is to not sweat. Deodorant was usually just a quick wash or a shower before bed, or before you went to the store. Everyone smelled sweaty and no one thought anything of it, it was just the natural way to smell. I think because of this the smell of sweat isn’t offensive to me, it doesn’t bother me when people smell a little, I find it “normal”. I know most folks who have grown up in the United States have a different view of this. A fear of “smelling” of anything natural is instilled in us from a young age. Somehow we’ve equated the smell of sweat to being unclean.

Now if it were a perfect world, we could simply quit wearing deodorant, tell people we were going natural and they would accept us even if we smelled a little sweaty – but that’s not the case. People expect us to not smell, or to even to sweat for that matter. As members of this type of society we try to find a balance between not poisoning ourselves and yet trying to mitigate the natural odors that come from being human.
Probably the biggest hurdle for folks making the switch to an all-natural deodorant is that you actually perspire. Most people wear anti-perspirants which blocks the production of sweat. Moisture in your pits can be a bit weird if you’ve been wearing anti-perspirant for you entire life. All-natural deodorants have ingredients that are supposed to limit the growth of odor producing bacteria that can happen when you sweat, they don’t stop you from sweating. I think another one of the big hurdles of switching to a non-toxic deodorant is that we all have different body chemistry. We all produce different kinds of bacteria and perspire at different rates. That means you’ll probably have to try a few different products until you find one that works for you. You also have to be careful when choosing an all-natural deodorant because sometimes they still contain questionable ingredients. We purchased an “all-natural, aluminum free” deodorant from Arm & Hammer and when we read the ingredient list it was was filled with unpronounceable chemicals.

I’ve used a few of the products we’ve purchased – but to be honest I rarely wear deodorant. I have very sensitive skin and my armpits have always been ultra-sensitive to just about everything. I’ve always preferred to not wear it rather than to have red irritated armpits. Because of this, Mr Chiots has been the guinea pig for this experiment in our family. He’s been willing to try to products and head out in the heat of the day to work up a sweat to put the products through their paces. Here’s a summary of each of the products that we’ve tried and who likes each product best:

Burt’s Bees Men’s Deodorant
This is a men’s deodorant so I didn’t try it. Mr Chiots did not like this deodorant at all, not one bit. He wore it once or twice and that was it. He didn’t like the feel and he said it didn’t work at all. The smell is rather nice though if you’re looking for a “manly” smelling deodorant this is a good one. The ingredients are pretty normal too, nothing to weird.

Tropical Traditions All-Natural Deodorant
Until this, I had never used a roll-on deodorant and I must admit – it was a little weird to put a wet product under my arms. You kind of have to hold your arms up for a minute or two for the product to dry – which really isn’t a problem. Mr Chiots was not a fan of this at all, I didn’t mind it so much. This deodorant worked fairly well. I found that it worked even better if you reapply halfway through the day. The three fragrances are all nice, I used the lavender and Mr Chiots opted for the Frankincense. I’ll keep using this product when I need deodorant (which is only when I’m going out in public for a long period of time). I like that all the ingredients are something I wouldn’t be afraid of consuming. Tropical Traditions was kind enough to offer to send one of our lucky readers some of their all natural deodorant to try. All you have to do is comment below for your chance to win. I’ll announce the winner next week!

Crystal Stick Body Deodorant
Mr Chiots and I have both tried this product. I don’t particularly care for it as it irritates my underarm skin making me itchy. Mr Chiots loves this product – it’s his favorite product by far. He likes that it goes on easily and dries quickly. He appreciates that it isn’t creamy or too textured. For him this product worked better than all the others that he tried. He’s been using this produce exclusively for the last few months and is very happy with it.
One of the best all natural forms of deodorant is to simply wash each evening. It’s all natural (if you’re using non-toxic soap) and you don’t have to keep an extra product around! If you don’t want to take a full shower, simply wash your armpits with a washcloth & soap. This is the method I use often as I find a bar of soap to be the best defense for underarm odor.
I know a lot of you make your own deodorant and have recipes for them. List them below if you’d like, or write up the recipe on your blog and link to it in the comments. One lucky commenter will win an All-Natural Deodorant from Tropical Traditions. We have a winner!

I feel like I’ve tried every natural deodorant there is trying to find one that will last me through the day, but I’m sure it’s an exaggeration. Currently I’m using Men’s Stock Natural Dry Herbal Pine Deodorant and it actually lasts through the day. I’m a woman and the deodorant does smell very manly when I first put it on but it fades by the time I get to work to something quite neutral.
Ingredients: Alcohol Denat., Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Extract, Arnica Montana (Arnica) Extract, Calamine, Tocopherol Acetate (Vitamin E), Calendula Officinalis (Calendula) Oil, Pinus Sylvestris (Pine) Oil.
I tried making my own, but every time I used it, I would get a very bad rash after about a week from the baking soda. I have to try a new formula. But for now, I’m using Tom’s of Maine and I like it pretty well. I’m not a very stinky person though, so if someone has a stronger body odor, it might not work for them. I’d love to try out the tropical traditions brand! Thanks
Interesting concept that I would like to try.
I have a deodorant crystal rock thing (I don’t know what it’s called) that I bought a few months ago and I find it pretty good. It is difficult to get used to not having a perfumed smell to it, though.
I have a Crystal Stick! When I first got it, I liked it, but after a few months, it didn’t seem to be doing the trick. So, I tried Trader Joe’s cotton deodorant. Same thing. Am currently using Tom’s 24-hr odor protection (I believe that is the name). I imagine that in a month or two I’ll be starting the rotation over.
(I also have a small covered dish with a baking soda/corn start mixture. It worked well enough, but if I had a particularly sweaty day, I smelled like a body-odory vegetable soup by the end of it!)
I don’t shower every day, and so have found that I generally will need wash my armpits in the morning, if I didn’t shower the night before. It really hasn’t been an imposition on my schedule at all
I’ve tried a deodorant crystal before, but I’m one of those people who always nicks herself shaving. If you don’t realize you’re cut, those things sting like a beast! I use Tom’s of Maine now.
You are spot on when you said we all have different body chemistries. My husband’s sweat doesn’t stink within one day’s time, but mine surely does!
When I grew up, the schools and school buses weren’t air conditioned, so I can tell you a thing or two about B.O.
I wouldn’t mind trying the natural deodorant for low-stress days when I’m around home.
I use a baking soda/corn starch mixture: roughly 1 part Baking soda to 3 parts corn starch. Then I add in dried herbs, usually neem and lavender that I’ve ground in my mortar/pestle.
My husband uses the Crystal stuff and really likes that.
Great website, found yours on someone elses. I wanted to invite you to Healthy 2day Wednesdays a new link up for sharing healthy ideas, recipes, etc. You could add this post. Hope you’ll join in! Have a wonderful week!
I am one of those people who STINK when I’m sweaty. I’ve tried the crystal; it doesn’t seem to work on the odor. I haven’t tried a homemade deodorant yet, but I’m on the verge, I suppose. Right now I use Jason brand, unscented. It works ok, but by the end of the day, I’m stinky, and if I don’t wash before I go to bed, I’m REALLY stinky by morning. Usually I wash it all off with a rag and soap before bed, and go all natural sleeping. I’m not so stinky in the morning, so I figure it does something weird overnight.
I’d love to try the Tropical Traditions. Maybe it will be the one!
With all due respect, let me just say: No, No, No, No, No, No, No.
“Mitigate the natural odors that come from being human”? I mean, why not, given that we attempt to obscure nearly every other aspect of our humanity. Body hair? Laser-removal! Vaginal birth? C-section! Lactation? Formula-feeding! Balding? Rogaine! Aging and putting on weight? Stomach-banding surgery!
But seriously. You’re human. If you go out on a hot day and exercise, you are going to sweat and you are going to smell a little, and that is okay. It NEEDS to be okay.
People may “expect us not to sweat or smell at all,” but is it incumbent upon us not to question that expectation at all? I’m not trying to suggest that every person is obligated to take up that particular mantle, but why is it so often just assumed that everyone will conform to the Smell Police?
I’m one of those only after a shower, and only if I’m going out deodorant wearers…I got used to not showering every day when living in Spain…(not developing country, but people still don’t wear deodorant there either.)
mmmm deoderant
I would like to try that one, with summer coming now is the time
Thanks for the chance…. i love my homemade deodorant, but have noticed that it occasionally irritates my armpits a bit. Nasty red itchy painful bumps….
Could be from shaving though, so i just quit that nonsense.
Here’s my recipe:
http://anaustinhomestead.blogspot.com/2011/01/natural-deodorant.html
I use plain white vinegar! I keep it in a spray bottle in the bathroom. A little spritz on my fingertips and I’m good for the day. I think it’s fantastic. As such, no need to enter me in the drawing
Well last summer I tried the baking soda etc. recipe and it just gave me a rash. After that I just didn’t use anything for awhile but I thought I better start trying a few to see if I can find one before the hot weather sets in. I am using one called Nourish by Honestly Organic and it feels a little sticky long after I have put it on, but I love the scent (organic wild greens) so I only use it every so often. I wonder if a little tea tree oil would work? I have been thinking about just using some essential oils maybe I will try some in some vinegar. =)
I’ve always preferred the use of baby powder (hypoallergenic talcum powder to be exact). I’ve also heard baking soda is quite useful for handling body order.
I tried the crystal rock, and it made me break out so badly, it took a long time to recover. I tried everything i could think of to help the itching, it wasn’t easy to bear. I also learned that i’ve very allergic to lavender oil when i put it on sensitive spots. Eventually i used a light layer of an organic zinc-based baby diaper cream to try to deal with the rash/irritation, and i used that instead of deodorant for about a year. Eventually i also added tea tree oil. I tried tea tree oil on its own and it didn’t help with odor.
Now i make my own with a combination of shea butter, coco butter, coconut oil, lanolin and beeswax with some corn starch and baking soda blended in. (Early on i also added the baby diaper cream, but i’ve not found it to be necessary to the blend.) Sometimes i also use some essential oil with this (one to which i’m not allergic) for a bit of scent. I’ve been using this for 2+ years now, and have to work closely with people and i’ve never had a problem with it, even in some very warm So Cal days. The only thing i can say is my tee shirts do tend to look a bit grimy in the under arms, but it isn’t very noticeable, and i can live with that.
About two years ago, after reading a blog about making your own deoderant, I was all over it. I called my mom. My mom makes and sells all natural skin care products, so I asked her to whip me up a batch. I wore it all through that summer, and yay! No stink! It’s awesome!
Truly I don’t know what’s in it. Baking soda, some butters, maybe cocoa or shea, some oils, some essences. I love it.
I keep begging her to make it for her customers. Hopefully soon.
I made my own last summer using coconut oil and baby powder. I was happy using it during the summer when my armpits would be wet even with conventional antiperspirant but didn’t like the wet feeling during the winter when I would be dry if using the regular chemical stuff.
Hmmm, I have a boyfriend who hates the deoderants that are available on the market… but seeing that deoderant crystal: hypoallergic. I have to hunt that down, badly!
With all of these essential oil talk, if I can get a deoderant that smells like coconut but without that fake smell, I’ll be all over it. Might have to look into concocting some of these recipes! Mmm…
I love Tom’s of Maine unscented stick deodorant. You’re right, it did take me a while to get use to actually sweating but I feel like it’s got to be much healthier for my body.
I recently started trying Tropical Traditions coconut oil, and I’d love to try their deodorant! Thanks!
I wipe off with a washcloth and soap when I feel the smell is too strong. But, I do use deodorant in my classroom at work because I work around other people and don’t want to offend. I’d like to try the Tropical Traditions deodorant.
I get the TT newsletter.

This is an area I really need to work on. I spent my teens/early 20s being plagued by sweat stains on clothes – not smelly, just obviously wet. While I’ve learnt to avoid certain fabrics/colours/fits of clothes, I also use a strong antiperspirant whenever I have to leave the house because those years of hiding-my-pits-embarrassment are still rather fresh in my mind.
I know sweating is healthy and stopping sweating in certain parts of my body isn’t healthy at all – but it’s a huge step to take to move on. Perhaps I’ll try to wean myself off the hard stuff over the summer (even though it’ll be warmer, I don’t have to teach/leave the house that often).
My chap mostly goes antiperspirant/deo free these days – he leaves the house even less than me
I have an anti-perspirant stick that I bought about 5 years ago and don’t use…why I keep it I have no idea – just habit I guess. I’ve used a loofah sponge for years and just scrub good under my arms and it seems to do well enough for me. Altho I have worked out in the sun gardening and digging etc (IOW hard work) but even then just a good scrub cleans things up nicely.

I use a natural Tea Tree Oil deodorant. It works okay, it just took a little bit for my body to get used to it. It is a little sticky when I first apply it.

I just started using the Tropical Traditions deodorant. I had tried everything (starting with the regular stuff and then moving into the natural stuff) and this is the best! Might sound weird, but I’ve found that if I add just a small pinch of baking soda after I apply the Tropical Traditions deodorant, it will last me ALL day!
As I recently ran out of antiperspirant, I decided to try to go with a natural deodorant. I have tried Tom’s lavender and have made the coconut oil/baking soda/cornstarch recipe. While I prefer the homemade one I am concerned about changing the ph of my skin. I think if I wask daily that should help, but I am concidering also alternating with the vinegar/alcohol/witch hazel recipe.
I have a sister who swears aluminun is causing a lot of problems with her psoriasis, and I would simply like to find a good dependable deodorant. As I get older, it seems they work less or else I notice it more.
I’ve been happy with my homemade deodorant made from this recipe: http://driftawaysoap.wordpress.com/2010/12/29/homemade-deodorant/
I subbed potato starch for the corn starch because I’m allergic to corn, and I’ll put more oil/wax in next time for slightly more creamy application.
I’ve also been really happy with the deodorant from Finchberry.com. It’s a bit on the fragrant side, but it works really well.
For those of you having rash reactions, you may need to decrease the amount of baking soda in your recipe.
Plain old baking soda. No additives. No mixing. Just step out of the shower and rub it under your arms. Simple, easy, and it’s effective for up to 4 days in the woods camping.
